People pay me to pick my brain – literally.
I even have a product called Pick My Brain. But despite all I say and do, I often don’t follow my own advice. I’m guilty of what I coach others not to do. I make myself small. I ignore my strengths and accomplishments and obsess over what’s not happening. I forget the uniqueness of my personal brand story and what makes me remarkable.
Wednesday was one of those days when I was wallowing in all that was not right.
Until I listened to the playback on Dr. Nancy O’Reilly’s podcast of the interview she did with me. If you are not familiar, Dr. Nancy is a Motivational Speaker, Author and President of WomenConnect4Good Foundation.
I admit I was not anxious to press play, given my mood. But I did.
Here’s what I learned.
I’ve accomplished a lot in my life.
I’ve reinvented twice. Each time I’ve taken skills I already had and combined them with my strengths to go further.
When someone says why, I say why not.
When I left teaching to work for a radio station, people asked why I was leaving a tenured job for the unknown. When I left a twenty-five year career to go out on my own, people asked why I was leaving an industry in which I was well paid for something I was very good at. When I decided to self-publish, people asked why I didn’t keep trying to get published traditionally. When I decided to create my online course on my own using the Rainmaker platform instead of signing up with a Udemy, people asked why. Each time, I said why not.
Sometimes staying open to what shows up is the best plan to have.
When I got that job selling advertising time on a country music station, I did not plan on staying in that business for twenty-five years. I didn’t even know if I would be good at it. When I left that business, I sure didn’t plan on being in business on my own, self-publishing two books, teaching a graduate class in Digital Marketing at NYU and helping people build brands using digital tools.
When I have absolute clarity I make things happen
After I did the first few workshops of YOUR DIGITAL YOU I knew the next step was to create an online version of the course. I didn’t know the first thing about how to take it online, but I figured it out and made it happen.
I don’t spend enough time acknowledging myself.
I love to create so much that often when I am done one project I am on to the next before I have allowed myself to pause and really stand in that space of achievement.
I still love audio
When I started in radio I was mesmerized with everything about the medium. I believed in the power of voice to engage and persuade. I still do, but now I’m obsessed with podcasts. And as soon as I’m clear on a sustainable topic I will have one of my own.( If you have a suggestion for me, please drop it in the comments section.) In the meantime, I’m honored to have been a guest on Dr. Nancy O’Reilly’s and welcome invitations to do others.
